Inspect the Optical Surface Before Wiping
Loose particles should be considered before direct contact cleaning. A hard particle trapped between the wipe and the optic may scratch the surface when pressure is applied.
Where the product manufacturer permits it, loose dust may first be removed using clean, oil-free air, nitrogen or another approved non-contact method. The surface can then be inspected again to determine whether contact cleaning is necessary.

Microfiber Wipes for Fine Particle Removal
Microfiber wipes use fine fibers to collect small particles, fingerprints and light oily residue. Their soft surface makes them suitable for selected optical components, display panels, camera covers and polished surfaces.
Microfiber does not mean that a wipe is automatically suitable for every optical coating. The material should be tested on the actual surface, particularly when cleaning soft coatings, reflective layers or high-value components.
For production use, buyers should also consider whether the wipe releases particles after cutting and whether it remains stable when used with the approved cleaning fluid.
Polyester Cleanroom Wipes
Knitted polyester wipes provide low particle generation, good strength and resistance to many commonly used cleaning solvents. They can be selected for cleaning optical production equipment, stainless-steel workstations, inspection fixtures and suitable optical surfaces.
Cold-cut wipes provide an economical option for less critical cleaning tasks. Laser-sealed and ultrasonic-sealed edges are available where improved control of edge fibers is required.
Low-Lint Nonwoven Wipes
Nonwoven wipes can be used for general optical production cleaning, equipment maintenance and removal of larger amounts of liquid. Cellulose and polyester composite materials provide useful absorbency and wet strength for many industrial cleaning tasks.
They may be suitable for:

For direct contact with precision optical surfaces, the material should be evaluated for softness, particle generation, binders and extractable residue. A highly absorbent wipe is not automatically the best choice for a coated lens.
Cleanroom Swabs for Small Optical Components
Standard wipes cannot reach all optical surfaces. Foam-tip and polyester-tip swabs are used for camera modules, sensor windows, instrument openings, lens mounts, connector areas and other small components.
A foam-tip swab can provide controlled liquid application and conform to small surface shapes. Polyester-tip swabs offer good material strength and can be selected where low particle generation is important.
The swab should not be forced into an opening that is smaller than the tip. Excessive pressure may damage the component or leave material behind. Customers should test the selected swab with the actual component before approving it for production.
ESD Control in Optical and Sensor Assembly
Camera sensors, optical detectors, display modules and electronic measuring instruments may be sensitive to electrostatic discharge. Static charge may also attract dust to optical surfaces after cleaning.

ESD gloves and garments also help reduce direct handling contamination, but operators should avoid touching the active optical surface whenever possible.
Recommended Optical Cleaning Procedure
1. Prepare the Working Area
Use a clean and sufficiently illuminated work surface. Remove unnecessary paper, cardboard and particle-generating materials from the immediate cleaning area.
2. Wear Suitable Gloves
Gloves help prevent fingerprints and skin oil from transferring to the component. Operators should handle optics by their edges or approved mounting surfaces.
3. Inspect Under Suitable Lighting
Identify whether the contamination consists of loose dust, fingerprints, dried liquid, adhesive or polishing residue. Cleaning a surface without first identifying the contamination may spread it further.
4. Remove Loose Particles First
Where permitted, use an approved non-contact method before wiping. Do not blow on the optic with the mouth because this may introduce moisture and additional contamination.
5. Use an Approved Cleaning Fluid
The optical manufacturer should confirm which fluid is suitable for the substrate and coating. IPA, acetone and other solvents are not interchangeable and should not be used without checking material compatibility and workplace requirements.
6. Use a Fresh Wipe or Swab
A used wipe may contain particles or residue from the previous cleaning pass. For precision components, a fresh cleaning surface should be used as required by the procedure.
7. Apply Minimal Pressure
Cleaning pressure should be sufficient to maintain contact but not so high that trapped particles are dragged across the coating. Avoid repeated dry scrubbing.
8. Inspect the Surface Again
After cleaning, inspect for streaks, particles, fibers and visible damage. If the result does not meet the acceptance standard, review the method before repeating the process.
How to Select Optical Cleaning Consumables
Identify the Optical Material and Coating
Glass, fused silica, plastic optics, infrared materials and coated filters may respond differently to cleaning fluids and mechanical contact. The substrate and coating should be confirmed before selecting the consumable.
Determine the Main Contamination
Dust, fingerprints, polishing compound, oil and adhesive require different cleaning approaches. A product selected for dry particle removal may not provide enough absorption for oily residue.
Review Surface Sensitivity
Soft coatings and first-surface mirrors require greater care than uncoated equipment windows. If the surface specification is unknown, the customer should consult the optical component manufacturer before wiping.
Evaluate Fiber and Particle Release
The wipe should not introduce more contamination than it removes. Material construction, cutting, edge sealing and packaging all affect particle performance.
Check Absorption and Liquid Release
The wipe must hold enough liquid for the cleaning method without flooding the optical surface. Excess liquid may carry contamination toward component edges or leave drying marks.
Confirm Packaging Requirements
Wipe quantity per bag, inner packaging, cleanroom transfer method and product identification should be included in the purchasing specification. Smaller packs may help reduce repeated opening in sensitive areas.
